Will you be posting any details on what this is?
I really want to know how the leds were held together (steel wire?)
How it is being controlled (hundreds of led drivers, multiple microprocessors and some custom software on a pc?)

Sure, I’ll post more details on it.

Can I have one please? 🙂

    How about videos?

So beautiful. Great job, Gene! Wish we lived in the same city, so I could have helped you with all that soldering!

Gene – It’s killin’ me here, the suspense waiting for a 8x8x8! When you think they gonna be available? GOTTA HAVE ONE! Maybe two or three! I am an addict as far as LED devices go! First it was nixie clocks, then it was pens, cameras and watches, NOW IT IS LEDs! I will beg! I will grovel! It’s an ugly sight! – Joe

Dude – I keep watchin’ your site . . . hoping for the day when an 8×8 will be available. Got to get one! – Joe.

Gene – Just bought a 6x6x6 RGB Cube to feed my LED lust. What I want is an assembled 10x10x10 RGB cube that that I can program. Any takers out there?

    • Gene · September 30, 2012 at 9:17 pm ·

Hey Mike – Well, we’ll have an 8x8x8 RGB soon which will be fully programmable. No 10x10x10 on the horizon though.

    Hi guys!
Your work is amazing! Really want to get my hands onto one of those larger cubes coming out soon, if affordable (kit?). But I do wonder, why is it allways even number of LEDs per side (4×4 or 8×8). My first thought was to build a 5×5, 7×7 or 9×9 just because of the central LED or row of LEDs. Wouldn’t that make it easier to display text/shapes?
    Cheers

      Thanks Miki!
As to your question about number of LEDs: I agree an odd number would be somewhat advantageous for graphics, but the number of LEDs is mainly driven by circuit efficiency. It’s not so much the number of LEDs per side but the total number of LEDs. 4x4x4 for instance is 64 LEDs, which is addressed as an 8×8 matrix; it so happens we have 8 bit driver chips, which makes that an efficient number of LEDs to drive (most LEDs for least cost.) 8x8x8 is in turn 8 4x4x4s.

    Hi ,
If there are 8×8 cubes , fully programable , please drop me a line when they are ready … also .. I lkive in NEw zealand so would need a modualr power supply , or the ablity to easily change out existing powers supply with something that fits in the wall sockets down here

    Kevin

    • Gene · October 19, 2012 at 3:43 am ·

      Hi Kevin,

If you were building the kit, swapping out the power supply would be straightforward. With a finished unit it would be more involved since it’s not designed to be swappable. But in any case that shouldn’t really be an issue, since the power supply will be able to accept a wide voltage range (100 – 240V) and the power socket will be a standard one (same as used on PC PSUs) so you can simply utilize a common power cable that fits your socket (or use a cheap physical adapter.)

The 8Cubes will be programmable, and I’d be happy to let you know when it becomes available.

    Hey Gene and Chris!
Just got your 8Cube and it is the best light sculpture I’ve seen yet…! I want to congratulate you both on creating an absolutely mesmerizing portable light show device. The Hypnocube is aptly named, being so visually compelling that it’s difficult to stop watching it! And I’m watching it in a daylight filled room… can’t wait to see it in a totally dark environment. The three-dimensional effects are ingenious. A user addition I’d like to see is the ability to adjust the speed of the light effects, and the ability to transition gradually through the colour spectrum of these amazing LEDs.
Makes you glad you have eyes!

      Thanks Michael!
You’re not the first one to request a “slow mode”, and we’ll keep that in mind when doing the next revision (though I’m not sure when that’s going to be – need to finish the damn 8Cube before even thinking about it!)

All I want for Christmas is an 8x8x8 Cube 🙂

  • Sam · December 6, 2012 at 9:47 am ·

I have assembled and own all of your products. Happy to “test” and 8X8X8 cube! I want one for Hanukkah. Been anxiously checking this site every 2 weeks for the last year… Love your stuff and VERY excited to hear any new news on a release date! Signe me up for 1 8x8x8 cube the DAY they become available!

If I promise to lick a 9 volt battery and adopt a stray kitten could I get an 8x8x8 kit? Please!?!?!

    • Gene · April 11, 2013 at 9:13 pm ·

Deal. You might need to wait a couple more months though…

  • tanner · September 4, 2014 at 10:06 pm ·

so is the 8x8x8 cube ever going to be done i mean its almost 2015 is it coming out or not? i will buy smaller cubes if the big one is never coming out so thats why i ask

    • Gene · September 4, 2014 at 10:22 pm ·

I know, I never thought it would take this long either… We’re currently making a push to wrap it up by the end of the year. But if you want to get 4Cubes in the meantime, I can maybe work out something that greatly discounts the 4Cubes when/if you buy the 8Cube later on.

  • tanner · September 9, 2014 at 10:40 pm ·

i would be interested but ill be broke for a few months sorry :c im just glad to hear that the 8cube will be for sale at some point. your led work is amazing truly outstanding! i look forward to purchase your products as soon as i get some more money hehe
