We’ve got our first 8Square board up and going. It’s not as novel as the cube, but it should be a lot easier to build, and we’re putting in USB so it can be controlled via a PC.

Awesome. WANT! I’m clearing a space next to my 4x4x4 for it.
How bright are these LEDs? Estimated release date / price?
The LEDs are pretty bright. They’re diffuse, so they’re not as intense straight on as clear LEDs (but they mix colors better and have a better viewing angle.)
The price will be similar to the 4cube, as the parts list is very similar. It’ll probably be released sometime in May, provided we don’t have any unexpected problems with new features in the software.
How much current does the board take, fully on, 50% on ?
What voltage doe it require ?
I’m interested in building a larger array but maybe populating only 1/4 of each board. What would the cost be for such a board ? What processor is used ? are there any extra ports on it
Lewis – the current version of the board (using a switching regulator, not pictured above) consumes about 200mA max (all pixels full on white) @ 9V. The regulator accepts input voltages from 7 – 40VDC, and the current consumption should vary more or less inversely proportionally. The board itself runs at 5V. We use the PIC18F4620, and we use all pins except for the I2C and UART pins, which are available and broken out on the board (the two GPIO pins used for the buttons could be re-appropriated as well.) As for cost, please contact me (http://hypnocube.com/contact) with what exactly you’re looking for (Do you want to buy a bunch of our boards as is? A custom board?)
Hi guys,
So what’s new?
There hasn’t been any real update on products, prototypes, or development since around April and inquiring minds and fans want to know!
How’s the 8x8x8 coming along, the mass produced 4x4x4’s and some of the other goodies you’ve hinted about?
Hope things are going well with you guys.
When can I buy one? Soon please!
I am spending all of Thanksgiving on getting the code for the 8 square finished. The arty side is almost done, then I have to finish the USB code, controller, and polish off the sample app that runs on Windows. It is a sample paint program you can draw on the square, and fiddle with the square visualization settings. Then final testing, and we should have it out the door 🙂
The code is up to about 25,000 lines of C and assembler, so it is a beast. But the visuals are amazing (from feedback we’ve gotten from those who know us), and there should be ample fiddling with setting on it. The square will have serial through USB support, so you can use hyperterm to log in check things. There is a Windows program (we’ll release source for the Windows part) that allows realtime painting on the square and setting internal visualization settings. This opens up using the square for your own visualizations while hooked up through the USB cable.
Cases and covering are getting finalized – we tested about 10 different faceplates to select one that really looks good. Final prototype PCB boards are ordered, and should be here Monday. If all of these items go well, we’ll order final kit parts and have finished the kit design.
Once the kit internals are finalized, we need to make the kit instructions, have a friend test them, and then create the website info.
http://www.hypnosquare.com is now ours and points to http://www.hypnocube.com.
Happy Thanksgiving 🙂
