Our new LED WS2812 serial LED driver chip is about done and ready for order. It will allow USB and serial connections to drive up to 10,000 serial LEDs. A 12Mbaud connection, for example using the FTDI high speed USB to serial chip, can control 10,000 LEDs at 40 frames per second.
Will this be what you use on the 8 cube?
Not likely. The LEDs in the 8 cube are standard LEDs, not the WS2812 type. However, we are considering a change if we can get the LEDs in the form factor we want, since they’ll be brighter.
On the other hand, we need to get that 8 cube out the door. 🙂
I am surprised that you have not produced a gitzmo with the same principle in the form of a cone -like a Christmas tree- to be used as a desk top Christmas tree.
Since you no doubt will think that my idea is brilliant and will start producing it, please send me one or two as a reward for a brilliant idea. Write me and i’ll send you my address.
By the way, i have had two of your cubes for two years running and it is indeed hiypnotic.

Hmm… That’s not a bad idea. Problem is we have more ideas than we can execute on. But if we do it I’ll send you a freebie!
