8Square Pics

Some new 8Square pics. The pictures below have the smoked acrylic front – the 8Square also comes with a clear glass front, but we think this looks better.

Clarification – you will also get the glass panel, so if you disagree with us you have the option of using it.

Superior Jig

A little while ago, one of our customers provided us with an improved jig design, and was kind enough to provide detailed instructions and pictures. It’s easier to make, use, and should produce better results than our jig design, so I recommend everyone use it. I’ve packaged it up into a PDF and posted it alongside the kit instructions. Thanks Rob!

It’s been awhile…

…since I’ve posted anything here. Despite what it may seem, we’re not dead yet! We’ve been working on the 8Cube, and actually making progress on it this time; hopefully we’ll have something available in the next couple of months.

To inject some life back in here, I’ll be posting pics of various things (better pics of the 8Square, new jig, maybe some prototype 8Cube) in the next couple of days.

New Server

Well, we’re finally moved over to a new host. Everything should be peachy, but if you come across any problems or weirdness please let us know.

Sweet!

We got some love from Craig Crossman over at The Seattle Times (you can read it here.) Which promptly brought our little server to its knees 🙂 . If you couldn’t access our site today, that’s why.

Thanks Craig, we’re glad to hear you like the cube!

General Updates On Our Activities

We received the new 4Cube boards from the fab house today. The new version isn’t dramatically different than the old, but will feature USB connectivity to the PC to allow hackers & artists to control the cube without having to deal with low level microcontroller programming. It will also feature some basic controls on the cube itself to navigate visualizations (pause, forward, back, etc.) Should be available sometime next week.

The final 8Square boards have been sent to the fabbers recently as well, and they should be arriving in a few weeks. Expect kits to be available in about 4-5 weeks.

The 8Cube has been on the back burner a bit while we wrap up the new 4Cube and 8Square, but with the recent soldering juju (posted below) we should have a fully operational RGB battlestation 8x8x8 cube, at least insofar as the the electronics is concerned. Hopefully Chris will get it dancing soon.

Hand soldering 0.5mm SMT is no fun

It ain’t pretty, but it’s progress.

(Incidentally, this is a module to mate the gumstix to the 8Cube controller. It’s basically a big breakout board.)

New 8Square Pics

Here’s some pics of the current 8square, in its frame. This should be very close to its final form – the only planned change is that the PCB will be black.

And here it is with a diffuse acrylic face plate.

The acrylic dims the LEDs too much to look good in well lit areas, but it looks pretty slick in the dark (I’ll grab a pic later, but I was in a rush.) We’ll include both the glass and acrylic so you can choose which you prefer.

We’re not dead yet!

Wow, it’s been months since the last post. Oops.

Things have been going somewhat slowly, but progressing nonetheless. Nothing major to announce yet, but I figured I should post something so y’all don’t think we fell off the ‘net.

I’ve got some (relatively) new pictures I’ll post here shortly.

8Square Prototype

We’ve got our first 8Square board up and going. It’s not as novel as the cube, but it should be a lot easier to build, and we’re putting in USB so it can be controlled via a PC.
